PROFILE

Filipe Mergulhão completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering with specialization in Biotechnology in 2002 at Universidade de Lisboa/Instituto Superior Técnico. He is a Chemical Engineer (5-year degree program from Instituto Superior Técnico completed in 1998). Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Universidade do Porto/Faculdade de Engenharia. He is a member of the Scientific Committees of the Doctoral Program in Chemical and Biological Engineering (PDEQB), Bachelor and Master Programs in Bioengineering, and Bachelor program in Chemical Engineering. He leads the Biotechnology group of LEPABE (Laboratorio de Engenharia de Processos Ambiente Biotecnologia e Energia) and the Bioindustry line of ALICE. His main research activities are in the area of Biofilms, particularly with application in the Industrial (mainly Food industry), Medical (mainly in biomedical devices and implants), and Environmental (mainly marine biofilms) sectors.
